Weight loss question- will this work?

I've recently gained 14 lbs(since Jan) and the birth of my 3rd child. I've started walking 2 miles per day(during my lunch hour) I have no specific diet- just trying to cut way back. Eating salads with some meat for lunch, a small portion at dinner and 100 cal snacks twice per day. Is this enough to lose a significant amount of weight - I would love to lose 30 lbs.Weight loss question- will this work?
As you know, your energy (including stored energy...aka body fat) is measured in calories. It doesnt matter where you get your calories - as long as you get them.





The trick is to not cut too drastically. You need energy, especially with 3 kids! Try to figure out what your real energy (calorie) requirement is first. It's based on your current weight, your ';resting metabolic rate';, and your current activity level, including your workouts. This is how many calories you and your body need to be happy. This will ';sustain'; your current weight. To burn more then you consume, you either workout longer/harder, or reduce calories by a small number. Such as 250-500.





Our bodies use carbs and fats as our primary source of energy. If we arent consuming the energy, we store it for later. This is why it's important to figure out how much we need FIRST, and consume only this much, or a little less. A diet that is mostly protein based, then carbs, then fat helps. Such as 40% protein, 30% carbs, 30% fats (unsaturated please).





I never recommend any drastic calorie cutting diets. The body reacts to this differently then many people think. It will see that it's not getting it's ';normal'; level of energy, and will reduce the energy demand by lowering your metabolic rate, reduce your muscle size, alter your mood, and hold onto body fat long and hard. Pretty much exactly what you don't want.





Work with your body. Use small reductions, and increasing burn rates. Recaluate your calorie needs as you reduce weight. Lower weight means doesnt need as much energy. Your body will keep up with your workouts using stored enegry -- but again, as long as it has enough daily calories. This is one of thr reasons why most diets fail. The other is that people are so concerned about loosing the pounds, that they forget about the most important factor -- how to keep them off! This always seems to be a second step - when it really should be the FIRST step.

If you want to lose that much weight, try doing a low-carb diet. I lost 85 lbs after the birth of our daughter in a year, but I also combined it with cardio 5 days per week. I have kept it off for a year so far!! I certainly didn't gain that much weight during pregnancy but was in need of losing weight in general. I'm such a health nut now and I feel fantastic and look better than I did in high school and I don't feel deprived on low-carb. I don't think of it as a diet though, but a change in my eating behavior. I still treat myself now and then, but the only difference is, I know when to stop!! Good luck!!





EDIT: What also encouraged me was a chart I hung on the wall to track my exercise. I could see it while doing my cardio and I always tried to beat my last calorie burn even if by 10 calories. It pushed me and it just worked for me.
You might not lose 30 lbs but it'll definately help you lose some of it. Make sure you eat 3 meals a day and a couple snacks. Those 100 cal snack packs don't offer much nutrition though. I'd suggest yogurt or a piece of fruit or something. Just make sure your caloric intake is under what you're daily burn is but not more than 600 calories less otherwise you're body'll slip into starvation mode and you'll start losing muscle and not fat.

If you want to accomplish your goal I would suggest walking and then also working out for additional 30 minutes every day. If your snack is packages it a bad idea, to have a more natural snack, a fruit would be ideal. Also I would suggest to drink a full glass of water before you eat.
Its not enough at all.





You cant just walk and expect to loose weight. You have to raise your heart rate. So I would suggest jogging at the minimum.





You need to eat enough calories to fuel your workouts. And by workout I mean actual cardio (no, not walking).

just walking should do it if you stay on a schedule of walking everyday it should help
